Just about everyone can recognize these creatures by their long tusks and blubbery bodies. Tens of thousands of walrus, primarily females and calves, have gathered on beaches near the village. World Wildlife Fund Inc. is a nonprofit, tax-exempt charitable organization (tax ID number 52-1693387) under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. In fact, they are the third largest species in the pinniped (seal, sea lion, and walrus) family, behind two species of elephant seals. Likewise, females mature at around 5 to 6 years but they do not start reproduction until after another 4 to 5 years. But they do not reproduce until they reach 15 years of age. Because they have limited habitats that they can occupy, they will often congregate in large numbers to take advantage of preferred areas. Their color is cinnamon brown. Because walruses rest and give birth on the pack ice, the reduction of this ice is endangering their survival. Its tusks are then used to increase the size of the hole. These large creatures feed on a wide variety of sea creatures, mostly found along the seafloor. Some other prey includes shrimp, sea cucumbers, tube worms, crabs, and soft corals. There are three different subspecies of this mammal that live in three different regions. Historically, humans have hunted these animals extensively for their blubber and tusks. Walruses stampede toward open water, when startled, sometimes crushing calves as they do so. Walruses have excellent sense of smell and hearing but poor eyesight. When the animals arrive, the community works with air carriers to change flight routes and with the fishing community to minimize traffic near the haulout site. Traditionally, female walrus and their young spend the summer on floating sea ice, resting on ice between dives to feed on clams, snails, and marine worms in the offshore shallow waters of the Chukchi Sea. These marine mammals congregate in large numbers on ice floes. “The haulout expanded for several miles along the beach.”As the climate changes, walrus habitat is rapidly changing, too. Residents monitor the walrus, report incidents of disturbances, and make sure that visitors and hunters stay away from the animals. Nowadays, native peoples can conduct traditional hunting, and there are regulations surrounding other hunts. These blubbery marine mammals can really pack on the pounds! “With all the changes in the Arctic, it’s an uncertain future for walrus,” says Garlich-Miller. About Atlantic Walruses. Are walrus endangered? These animals are diurnal. The walrus can spend most of their time either in the water foraging or hauled out, at rest. Habitat for the Pacific walrus in the Chukchi Sea is disappearing from beneath them as the warming climate melts away Arctic sea ice in the spring, forcing the large mammals to “haul out” of the ocean and temporarily live on land. Male walruses fight with their tusks to compete for females and establish dominance. The Atlantic walrus is known for its commanding presence, whiskers and long ivory tusks, which are used when foraging for food on the ocean floor and to break sea ice and climb out of the water. Walruses live in a frigid and unforgiving Arctic wilderness. One exceptionally large specimen was 16 ft. long and approximately 5,000 lbs. Conversely, the Pacific walrus lives in Artic waters of the Pacific Ocean. The walrus' other characteristic features are equally useful. This usually includes fish, clams, mussels, and other shellfish. Potential threats are climate change and global warming causing changes and loss of suitable habitat and increase of shipping and development of oil and gas fields.
