If you love the fantasy genre, this is the season for you! Luckily most of the words in this book have English equivalents, I'm a little concerned if the next one (should there be one) takes place on Mahit's home station (her culture is located on space stations not planets) since their language is, according to Arkady, based on Modern Eastern Armenian! Beyond juggling dozens of complex moving pieces in her new assignment, she must work to understand how they all fit together if she’s ever going to succeed in figuring out what exactly Yskander was up to, why he died, and what she’s going to do about it now that she’s at the center of the intrigue. I just could not get into it. The world building is excellent, the characters believeable, the 'top secret' technology is plausible & an interesting invention, and the Empire & its denizens unique. There are elements of the Roman Empire, the Aztecs and Imperial Japan there, but Teixcalaan is very much a unique creation. This series had heart and an ending that truly made the book for me. Books such as The Goblin Emperor, The Outback Stars, Articles of Federation, Traitor Baru Cormorant, all scratch that itch. Great concepts, excellent character development, great dialogues, humour, emotional depth... One of my favorite plots in science fiction is the stranger in a strange land, where we follow an individual from a culture as they are immersed in a different culture. So, the best introduction to this wonderful book is the author interview at NPR: "A Memory Called Empire" is a densely-packed, detailed story of interstellar palace intrigue. And sometimes this world-building happens almost as a grace note at the novel’s edges, as do the numerous examples of Teixcalaanli poetry she includes. So when the small independent mining station Lsel is contacted by The Empire to supply another ambassador because the current one is missing, it raises a few eyebrows to say the least. What’s impressive to me about A Memory Called Empire is the way it takes all of the above — which could sound like impenetrable sci-fi nonsense that … A tremendous read, with fabulous worldbuilding, deep humanity, great characters, heart-thumping tension, twisty politics, and an immense amount to think about. But our distinctive brand of explanatory journalism takes resources. Of those, with luck, a small handful will actually turn out to be decent reads. (In this far-future world, humanity has carved out its own corner of the Milky Way, but life on various planets and space stations has created impressive genetic variance as natural selection does its thing. In fact, I’m still thinking about them. Ambassador Mahit Dzmare, the protagonist of Arkady Martine’s debut space opera A Memory Called Empire, has more than one identity crisis on her hands: she has a deep affinity for the empire that wants to annex her home and she also literally has someone else’s personality nested in her brain. It’s the trick of making you feel inferior, of longing to be Other, even when you may love who you are. The differences between Mahit’s own culture and that of Texicalaan is such a stark contrast, that you are automatically drawn to Mahit’s plight, she’s enthralled by this culture that has been a thing of dreams while realizing there may be to her own culture that she’s never considered. Now, Mahit must discover who is behind the murder, rescue herself, and save her Station from Teixcalaan’s unceasing expansion–all while navigating an alien culture that is all too seductive, engaging in intrigues of her own, and hiding a deadly technological secret–one that might spell the end of her Station and her way of life–or rescue it from annihilation. Those expecting shoot-em-up action need to slow it down a little here. Just a moment while we sign you in to your Goodreads account. Firstly, I feel the need to dispense with some of the overblown hype on this book: the murder mystery isn't that critical to the plot; the technological thingy is neither deadly nor, as it turns out, all that secret, & it certainly isn't going to spell the end of the home world; Mahit Dzmare isn't necessarily in that much danger; and finally, the Empire isn't so much unfriendly as very political with 3 different groups vying for power, & the new ambassador as an unknowing key figure in the powerplay. Instead of periodic knife fights the author periodically just flexes on how long it was since they slept or hydrated themselves and then has them *keep hustling*. If you have already contributed, thank you. In her scenario, mysteries are romances of justice. newsletter. Change ), You are commenting using your Twitter account. And science fiction is the romance of political agency. Presidents hate to look sick. And yet it would also be a betrayal. The protagonist is a huge fan of the language, the culture, & the people of her new post, & does feel like a country cousin, at least at first. The characters in this were strong and compelling, and I really enjoyed all of the twists of the plot, which revolves around political machinations & a new ambassador from a satellite kingdom of a vast interplanetary empire. Imago technology is a Lsel state secret, yet the Teixcalaanlitzlim find it during Yskandr’s autopsy, and this discovery could embolden those who wish for Teixcalaan to consume Lsel. Think Altered Carbon’s cortical stacks: these devices copy a person’s personality and memories, and exist alongside their host. And so vanishingly few can, especially with prolonged exposure. Mahit’s situation is the perfect introduction to an unfamiliar world, as Martine moves her through the gilded halls of the Teixcalaanli capitol, meeting the politicians she’s been sent to interact with, the fantastical technologies installed in the city, and the poetry that represents the pinnacle of high culture for the empire. Start by marking “A Memory Called Empire (Teixcalaan #1)” as Want to Read: Error rating book. But let me give it a shot anyway, because the best way to read this book is to know almost nothing about what happens after its first few chapters. Chip in as little as $3 to help keep it free for everyone. Still, very much enjoyed this & would certainly read on in a series. When Mahit goes to meet Yskandr’s original assistant, she discovers a bigger plot — and an assassin’s bomb that reveals that there’s more to her predecessor’s death than was originally reported. It is easy to see why Mahit and many other characters are seduced so irrevocably by the ways of the Teixcalaanli; everything about the Empire, and every way in which they’ve created their culture serves their image as the only bastion of civilization among the stars. Martine’s showcasing of the Empire, when juxtaposed with the more realistic, gritty, forms of artwork of Lsel Station, illuminates a fascinating struggle familiar not just to Mahit, but to anyone who has ever been enamored by a culture they love while being equally terrified and angry at how it swallows and consumes everything in its path. I struggled with this book, but ultimately didn't enjoy it. Let us know what’s wrong with this preview of, Published We have a vibrant culture in the Teixcalaan and their conquering empire, and then there are those who are absorbed into this empire, whether they like it or not, and then there is Lsel station. There is a tremendous amount that happens to the protagonist of this tale, and I can’t say that the cumulative emotional and physical effects of her jam packed adventures — some of which are downright traumatic — are always convincingly drawn. "A Memory Called Empire" is a densely-packed, detailed story of interstellar palace intrigue. So when the small independent mining station Lsel is contacted by The Empire to supply another ambassador because the current one. There's a problem loading this menu right now. In each edition, we’ll tell you about something from the world of culture that we think you should check out. The empire can’t help but knock over smaller, independent nations, because even when it doesn’t try to, its pop culture and brand of politics infect everything around it. The Teixcalaanli would look down on me telling you what to do in such a direct manner, but I don’t mind being a barbarian in their eyes, so here’s my advice: go read this book.
